April 7, 2002
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 57th-ranked Santa Clara University men's tennis team extended its win streak to 12 matches with a 5-2 victory over Loyola Marymount in West Coast Conference action this afternoon at the SCU Tennis Center. With the victory, the Broncos improve to 15-4 on the season. Freshman Chris Lam and sophomore Erich Chen paired together for the Broncos for the first time this season at No. 1 doubles and earned an 8-3 victory over the Lions' Tigran Martirosyan and Leopold Graeubig. Santa Clara also won at No. 3 doubles to secure the first point of the afternoon. "Chris and Erich complement each other very well," Bronco head coach Sean Burns said. "They stayed together in every point and served well." In singles, Chen was the first off the court with his 6-4, 6-2 win on the fourth court. Burns added Chen played a very efficient and solid match. Senior Victor Camargo posted the only other straight-set victory for the Broncos, at No. 3 singles over Johannes Asuja. Lam clinched the team victory for SCU. LMU scored its two points at No. 2 and 5 singles. Anthony Evrard's victory over Francisco Zepponi ended the Bronco freshman's 10-match win streak. "We didn't play as well today as we were playing last week, but we competed well enough for the victory," Burns said. "I think our guys are still spent from a challenging spring break. Hopefully, we'll rebound. We have four difficult matches this week, starting with Pacific." The Broncos will try to make the number 13 lucky when it returns to action on Wednesday, visiting the Tigers in Stockton for a 2 p.m. non-conference contest.
