Men's Tennis Sweeps Sacramento State
April 6, 2002
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The 57th-ranked Santa Clara University men's tennis team extended its win streak to 11 matches with a 7-0 victory over Sacramento State this afternoon at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club. With the victory, the Broncos improve to 14-4 on the season. "The team was fired up today to play because we lost to Sac State the last time we visited here," Bronco assistant coach George Husack explained. "We started out well and continued the intensity for the sweep." The Broncos clinched the doubles point to open the match and then won all six singles in straight sets. Freshman Chris Lam played well for the second straight contest, leading the Broncos at the top singles slot and earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sherif Zaher. Junior Federico Mattioli also scored an impressive victory, his final a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Hornet Josh Price at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Erich Chen clinched the team victory for the Broncos with his 20th win of the season. By reaching the milestone, this year's squad becomes the first ever to boast three players with at least 20 singles victories, as Chen joins freshman Francisco Zepponi (26) and Lam (21 victories) for the program first. Fans can next see the Broncos in action tomorrow afternoon, when the team returns to the SCU Tennis Center for a 1 p.m. showdown against conference opponent Loyola Marymount. "Three of our next home matches are at home," Husack added. "We're all excited to be back there."
