Bronco Men's Tennis Cruises to 7-0 Sweep of Cal Poly

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team earned a convincing 7-0 victory over Cal Poly today at the Santa Clara University Tennis Center.

The Broncos improved to 5-4 on the season and have outscored its opponents by a combined 13-1 in its last two dual matches since its loss at top-ranked Stanford. Santa Clara defeated Saint Mary's College by a 6-1 margin on Saturday at home. Cal Poly fell to 4-6 on the season.

"I thought we competed very well today as a team," said head coach Sean Burns. "We attacked on every court and fought really hard on every point, which can be difficult when you are in a position where you are expected to win the match.

"Victor (Camargo) was up 6-1, 5-1 and missed a shot but showed a great deal of intensity and competitiveness. He worked twice as hard on the next point to close out the match. I thought all of our guys showed some really positive traits today in that regard."

Burns singled out the performances of Camargo and Federico Mattioli as highlights of the match. To open the day, the duo earned an 8-4 win over Stacy Meronoff and Davey Jones then cruised to convincing singles victories at the nos. three and six positions for the Broncos. Camargo defeated Meronoff by a 6-1, 6-1 score, while Mattiolo knocked off the Mustangs' Brandon Shainfield by a 6-2, 6-0 margin.

The Broncos opened the match by winning the crucial doubles point by virtue of winning two of the three matches. However, Cal Poly's duo of Nick Tracy and Greg Levy earned the Mustangs' only win of the day with an 8-6 victory over Lam and Rick Ruso.

Santa Clara returns to action on March 10 when its hosts West Coast Conference rival San Francisco in a 2 p.m. match at the Santa Clara Tennis Center. Cal Poly hosts UC Santa Cruz and Ventura City College in two dual matches on March 23 at the Cal Poly Tennis Courts.
