Men's Tennis Defeats Saint Mary's 6-1
March 2, 2002
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team defeated Saint Mary's 6-1 in West Coast Conference action this afternoon at the SCU Tennis Center.
The Broncos opened the afternoon with doubles, as fans saw the return of the nationally-ranked duo of Chris Lam and Rick Ruso. Out with an injury for most of the spring season, Ruso return last week at Stanford before pairing up with Lam for a solid 8-3 victory on the first court. Teammates Erich Chen and Michael Bruggemann paired together for the first time this season with a similar 8-3 victory to nab the Broncos the doubles point.
Just as impressive as his doubles victory with Federico Mattioli, senior Victor Camargo earned a solid victory over SMC's Arturo Planell, taking a 6-2, 6-0 win on the third court. Mattioli did some damage on his own, shutting out his Gael opponent at No. 6 singles.
"We are really happy to be home again, after spending the entire month of February on the road," head coach Sean Burns said. "Our team played aggressive today with the confidence that comes with the home advantage."
The Broncos even their record to 4-4 on the season and return to action tomorrow when they host Cal Poly in non-league play at 1 p.m., also at the SCU Tennis Center.
