Men's Tennis Falls to Top-Ranked Stanford
Feb. 26, 2002
STANFORD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team fell to top-ranked Stanford 7-0 this evening at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Stanford. With the victory, the Cardinal improves to 9-1 on the season, while SCU falls to 3-4.
In doubles action, courts two and three provided much excitement for the Broncos. Sophomores Erich Chen and Rick Ruso were on the second doubles court and kept up with the Cardinal's Ryan Haviland and Joe Kao through 4-4. Stanford won the next three games before the Broncos' began a rally that saw some great shots, even though the Bronco duo would only win one more game before the match ended on a Haviland service ace.
On court three, senior Victor Camargo and junior Federico Mattioli were down 7-3 to the Cardinal freshman duo of Sam Warburg and Phil Sheng before winning three straight games with smart ball placement by both Broncos and two timely lobs by Mattioli to keep the duo in the match. The final game went to multiple dueces, but on match point, Sheng's service ace was returned wide to close out all three doubles matches in favor of the Cardinal.
The Broncos return home to the SCU Tennis Center to begin a five-match homestand this weekend. Santa Clara will host Saint Mary's in West Coast Conference action on Saturday. First serve is at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Broncos will host Cal Poly for a 1 p.m. non-league contest.
