Bronco Men's Tennis Wins Fifth-Straight Match

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's tennis team won its fifth-straight match with a 5-2 victory over visiting Sacramento State today at the Santa Clara University Tennis Center. An NCAA participant two seasons ago, the visiting Hornets were carrying a 2-0 record into the match. Santa Clara improved to 5-2 on the season. Santa Clara scored the first point after posting victories at No. 1 & No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Michael Bruggemann and co-captain Ryan Livesay captured an 8-5 victory over the Hornets' Sherif Zahir and Joe Gilbert - a team ranked #10 in Region VIII as well as fall champions of the Fresno State Bulldog Classic and UOP's Stockcoverage.com Classic. The Broncos' No. 2 team of senior Matt Cox and freshman Erich Chen battled back in the deciding tiebreaker of their match to defeat Sac State's Kevin Vieira and Sylvain Iff 9-8 (7-5) to clinch the doubles point for the Broncos. In singles, Santa Clara posted victories at the Nos. two through five positions. Both Cox and Federico Mattioli added to the Bronco lead with straight set wins over the visiting Hornets at the No. 2 and No. 5 singles positions. Freshman Michael Duong avenged a fall season loss to CSUS's Joe Gilbert with a three-set 2-6, 6-2,7-5 victory. Duong, trailing 3-0 and 4-1 in the final set, rallied passed Gilbert and clinched the overall match for the Broncos. In the final match of the day, junior transfer Victor Camargo -scored his 6th straight singles victory by outlasting the Hornets' Iff, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.
The Broncos are in action next against WCC rival Saint Mary's this Sunday in a 1 p.m. match at the Santa Clara University Tennis Center.
