Feb. 18, 2002

SAN FRANCISCO - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team defeated San Francisco 5-2 this afternoon at the Olympic Club to open West Coast Conference action. With the victory, the Broncos improve to 3-1 on the season, 1-0 in league play.

The match, originally scheduled for last Friday but postponed due to wet weather, started of in reverse, as the teams played singles first just in case inclement weather returned this afternoon. The Broncos clinched the match in singles play but continued into doubles action, where the Dons took the final point.

Freshman Chris Lam led the Broncos at the top singles slot with a 7-6, 6-2 decision over USF's Joachim Lien. Fellow freshmen Francisco Zepponi and Taylor Bedilion also earned straight-set victories in the fifth and sixth singles positions, respectively.

"We've been off for two weeks, so I'm pleased with today's effort," head coach Sean Burns said. "We got the job done with a victory, but in order to reach the goals we've set out for ourselves this season, we've got to pick up the intensity."

The Broncos return to action on Friday, February 22 when they visit UC Santa Barbara for a 2 p.m. match.
