SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team opened up its 2002 spring season with a convincing 7-0 win over UC Santa Cruz Sunday morning at the Santa Clara University Tennis Center.

The match was delayed one day because of rain Saturday morning, but the time off did not seem to bother the Broncos as they bolted out to a 1-0 lead after taking two of the three doubles matches to begin the day.

Taylor Bedilion and Erich Chen were most impressive in the morning session, defeating Brian Casey and Ben Bartels by a score of 8-3. Ben Hidalgo and Chris Lam also posted a convincing win, defeating Andrew Cohen and Dave Johnson by the same score.

In singles action the Broncos continued their dominance, sweeping all six singles matches, including Federico Mattioli's three-set marathon in which he rallied from down one set to beat Carlos Gonzalez 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Victor Camargo seemed to have the easiest time of any player on the court, breezing by Brian Casey 6-1, 6-1. Josh Braley also posted an impressive win, defeating Andrew Cohen 6-2,6-2.

The Broncos will continue their long day as they beging the second match of their Sunday doubleheader, with the UC Davis match just beginning.
