San Luis Obispo, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis was edged out by Cal Poly, 4-3, on Sunday in a rescheduled non-conference match. The match was originally scheduled for March 3 but was postponed due to rain.
After losing the doubles point, the Broncos (12-9) took three of the four singles matches to go up 3-2 in the match, on wins by Vasileios Iliopoulos, Jesus Tapiador Barajas and Connor Garnett. However, Cal Poly (17-5) finished strong to win the last two singles matches to clinch the victory. The match came down on court four with Axel Damiens beating Robert Seby in three sets 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to secure the Mustangs win.
In doubles play, Dominic Bechard and Karl Enander defeated Kamran Khan and Connor Garnett 6-2 on court three. The Mustangs clinched the doubles point on court two with Andrew Whitehouse and Roman Shenkiryk's 6-4 win over Iliopoulos and Barajas.
The Mustangs went up 2-0 when Josh Ortlip downed Andrew Gu 7-5, 6-3 on court one of singles play.
Santa Clara then reeled off three consecutive singles wins starting with a straight set victory by Iliopoulos over Alexander Stater 6-3, 6-3 on court five.
Barajas evened the match at 2-2 with his three set win over Dominic Bechard 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 on court two followed by another three set victory by Garnett over Antoine Noel 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 on court three.
Playing on court six, Sebastien Mathieu had an opportunity to extend the match to a third set but came up short in the second set tiebreak, losing 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to Karl Enander setting up the battle on court four between Seby and Damiens.
The Broncos resumes conference play in the final weekend of the regular season, traveling to Southern California to play Loyola Marymount on Friday and Pepperdine on Saturday.
