STOCKTON, Calif. – In day two of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday, Bronco junior Connor Garnett defeated the fourth seeded singles player, Akihiro Tanaka of Oregon, in three sets, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5, to advance to the round of 16.
It was Garnett's third win in the 128 player singles draw, besting last year's results when he won twice at the ITA Regionals.
Garnett will take on 12th seed Paul Barretto of Cal at 1 p.m. on Saturday for an opportunity to advance to the quarterfinals.
The other Broncos who made it to the round of 32, Jesus Tapias Baraias and Kamran Khan, were both defeated on Friday. Barajas lost in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, to Portland State's Nathan Boniel. And Khan lost to Portland's Carlos Donat, 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles play, the Broncos picked up two wins before falling in the round of 32.
Barajas paired with Vasileios Iliopoulos to win their round of 64 doubles match, 8-7(7) coming back from match point down at 7-2, over UC Davis' Jonathan Star/Chethan Swanson.
Another Bronco doubles team comprised of Garnett and Andrew Gu also won their round of 64 match, 8-5, over Matthew Campana/Calvin Jordaan of Saint Mary's.
