SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Upsetting the No. 2 team in the country, the West Coast Conference announced Thursday that Santa Clara's John Lamble and Ilya Osintsev have been named WCC Doubles Team of the Month of March. Lamble and Osintsev are the first Bronco tandem to win the award this year. Katie Le was named the WCC Women's Singles Player of the Month for March as well.
Lamble and Osintsev have paired up almost all season for Santa Clara as the No. 1 doubles team. The two underclassmen have played together in every dual match dating back to Feb. 24 when they were briefly paired with other Bronco players.
The Bronco tandem pulled off a major upset in route to their crowning as WCC Doubles Players of the Month. The Santa Clara duo upset the Intercollegiate Tennis Assosciation's No. 2 team in the country, Alex Llompart and Finn Tearney of Pepperdine. During the month of March, Lamble and Osintsev recorded a 7-1 record and won five straight matches. Overall this season, the pair is 10-6.
Lamble, a sophomore from Saratoga, Calif. has been a tremendous asset to the Broncos in both singles and doubles. He is currently second on the team in singles wins as well as his impressive doubles performance. Last year, Lamble earned All-WCC Honorable Mention as a freshman.
Osintsev, a freshman from Russia, has played well in his first season as a Bronco. Added to the roster late this fall, Osintsev has proven to be a valuable addition. He has played singles matches as the team's primary No. 5 singles player and has amassed a 13-1 record.
