DALLAS - No. 49 Santa Clara men's tennis started its two-match weekend in Texas with a 7-0 win over Southern Methodist University. The Broncos have a rest day Saturday before visiting another school in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, No. 44 TCU.
The Broncos' sweep of the Mustangs was highlighted by junior Tom Pham, who won his sixth-straight match to continue his perfect spring. Pham picked up a win over SMU's Robert Sajovich. Sajovich retired after Pham was up 4-2. In the No. 1 spot, senior Kyle Dandan picked up a victory in three sets. Dandan outlasted Gaston Cuadranti 7-5, 5-7, 10-8. Sophomore John Lamble defeated Pablo Perez-Esnaola in straight-sets. Nicolas Vinel, Ilya Osintsev and Eugene Muchynski also picked up victories for the Broncos.
In doubles, three Bronco tandems closed out the match. Seniors Vinel and Dandan won their doubles bout with a 9-8 decision. This fall, the duo of Vinel and Dandan was ranked No. 37, the highest ever for a Bronco pair. Osintsev and Lamble picked up a victory, as well as the Pham and Muchynski partnership.
"It was a solid start to the trip," said Santa Clara head coach Derek Mills. "Now we have to get prepared to play a very good TCU team."
The Broncos will play No. 44 TCU in Forth Worth, Tex. on the TCU campus at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, on Sun. at 2 p.m. local time, 11 a.m. Pacific.
