SANTA CLARA, Calif.- This weekend the Santa Clara men's tennis team, which moved up to No. 47 in the ITA rankings Tuesday, travels to Fayetteville, Ark., to take on Big Ten opponent No. 74 Iowa on Sat., Feb. 12 and then SEC opponent No. 71 Arkansas on Sun., Feb. 13.
In addition, Kyle Dandan was named to the WCC pre-season All-WCC team on Tuesday. The Bronco men were picked No. 3 in the West Coast Conference pre-season poll released as well (click here for the WCC release). Santa Clara was picked No. 3 in the WCC poll with Pepperdine voted as the pre-season favorite and San Diego picked in the No. 2 slot.
The Broncos enter this weekend with 4-3 overall record on the season, including a 4-3 win at LMU last Sunday.
"This is a big weekend for us playing a Big 10 and an SEC team on the road, which are both two of the best conferences in the nation," said Bronco head coach Derek Mills. "We are really motivated to get back on the road and play two strong teams."
Both opponents are currently 1-1 this season. The Hawkeyes coming off a 5-2 lost against the Blue Demons of DePaul last weekend. However, their key players are still unbeaten. Sophomore Garret Dunn remained perfect on the year in both singles and doubles, and junior Will Vasos also stayed perfect in singles action with a convincing victory last match. The Broncos must stop these two players in order to grab a win.
The Razorbacks recently captured their first dual victory against then-No. 68 SMU Mustangs on Jan. 30. They swept their opponent in doubles comfortably, but had tough matches in singles with three out of four victories going to the third set. The singles points seem to determine the winner in Arkansas' match.
Matches are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. vs. Iowa on Saturday and 11:00 a.m. vs. Arkansas on Sunday at Arkansas's Dills Indoor Facility. Match results will be posted throughout the weekend, on www.SantaClaraBroncos.com.
