No. 75 Santa Clara Men's Tennis Drops Tough One 5-2 To No. 57 Arizona State

Feb. 9, 2007

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 75 Santa Clara men's tennis team fell in a tough match on Friday afternoon to No. 57 Arizona State 5-2. Jay Wong and Robert Gallman won their singles matches, while Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen continued their stellar play in doubles. The Broncos nearly captured the doubles point but fell in a tiebreaker in the deciding match.

The Broncos came into Friday's matches with good knowledge of the Sun Devils after facing them in the Aztec Invitational in January. After losing the first doubles match of the day, Macek and Rasmussen routed Juan Carlos Rebaza and Nick Hegarty 8-3 to even the match. In the deciding match, Brian Brogan and Robert Gallman got down 1-5, but battled back to 5-5 and the match eventually went to a tiebreaker before Arizona State's T.J. Bellama and Murilo Souza pulled it out for the Sun Devils 7-4.

In singles, the Broncos had two bright spots at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Jay Wong captured his 16th win of the year, beating Wes Miller 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, while Robert Gallman won at No. 4 when Nick Hegerty retired with the score 2-6, 6-2, 0-3.

"It was not our best day out there," said head coach George Husack. "It was good to see that we fought back in doubles, but we just did not have enough. In singles, Arizona State was the better team today. We made a few too many errors at key times today."

Brian Brogan's brother, Patrick, is a member of Arizona State's team, but he did not play Friday against the Broncos.

The Broncos get right back to work as they take on another ranked foe on Saturday, Feb. 10. SCU plays No. 72 Arizona at 1:00 p.m. PT in Tucson.
