SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara Broncos men's tennis team dropped a hard fought 5-2 dual match to the No. 25 Boise State Broncos on Sunday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center. Brian Brogan won his third singles match in a row, while Robert Gallman gained the other point with a victory at No. 4 singles. The Broncos had two matches points to clinch the doubles point at No. 1 doubles, but the pair of Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields fell 9-8 (8-6).

"Overall, we competed very well today," said head coach George Husack. "Boise State is a very good team that just defeated Stanford and they have a lot of talent and depth. If we had been able to get the doubles point that might have helped us push them even more. We need experiences like this so that we can get better as a team. We have another big match on Tuesday against Cal."

Boise State came into the day with momentum after beating No. 9 Stanford on Saturday. However, SCU played close in all three doubles matches and most of the singles matches.

At No. 1 singles, Jan Macek got up a set on the No. 15 player in the nation, Luke Shields, before falling in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Tommy Hicks also stretched his match at No. 6 to three sets before losing to Stanley Sarapanich. Bobby Rasmussen battled stomach problems throughout his match and nearly won the first set tiebreaker before losing 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. He came back from 5-1 in the first set to take a 6-5 lead before being penalized a game for an extended bathroom break.

Brogan won his third straight match, pulling out a tough three-setter against a former NorCal junior tennis rival, Eric Roberson. Gallman won his first match of the dual season on Sunday.

"I am happy for Robert and Brian," said Husack. "They won big matches against very good competition and they played aggressively and confidently. They also had a great doubles win."
