SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team fell to San Diego State 4-3 this afternoon at the SDSU Courts. It marked the sixth one-point loss for the Broncos this season, who see their record fall to 7-11 on the season, while the Aztecs improve to 7-4.
After dropping the doubles point, the Broncos came out quick in singles winning the first set in four of the six singles matches, on pace for what the team would need to take a team victory. Freshman Bobby Rasmussen was the first off the courts this evening, tying the match at 1-1. The Aztecs moved ahead again with Daniel Jung's court four victory.
Santa Clara earned another point with junior Taylor Bedilion's 6-2, 6-4 win over Ryan Redondo on court two. Once again, SDSU move ahead, this time with a come-from-behind victory. Freshman Kevin McQuaid fought off a match point to close out his contest with a victory, tying the team score at 3-3 and focusing all eyes on the top singles court. Felix Hardt clinched the match for the Aztecs with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Gernot Fischer.
"It's been a tough week of tennis and I know we're not satisfied with the all of the results," SCU head coach George Husack said. "We suffered yet another 4-3 defeat and it's up to us to pick it up another notch. This means adopting a whole new attitude in practice and matches. The fourth point is out there and we must work harder to get it."
The Broncos return home to the Degheri Tennis Center for a doubleheader next Sunday, April 4. Santa Clara will take on West Coast Conference opponent Portland at 10 a.m. and follow with a 2:30 p.m. contest against Sacramento State.
