FRESNO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis program opened up fall action today at the Wathen/Hancock Bulldog Classic, hosted by Fresno State University at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The Broncos won three of four opening-round singles contests and both doubles matches.
Senior Michael Bruggemann, junior Erich Chen and sophomore Francisco Zepponi all won their matches in the first round, but fell in second-round action and will join senior Federico Mattioli in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
"It was our first time out, so I was happy to see the hard work ethic from the guys," first-year head coach George Husack said. "We still have some things to work on. It was a benchmark for our team to see where we need to be at."
After more than 12 hours of action, Chen and Bruggemann were the last Broncos off the court, combining for an 8-5 doubles victory. Mattioli and Zepponi made up Santa Clara's only other doubles entry, and they too were victorious, earning a 9-7 win.
The tournament will continue through Sunday.
