Six Broncos Receive All-WCC Honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Six Santa Clara men's soccer student-athletes were selected for All-West Coast Conference honors this season, the league announced Wednesday. The group was led by first team honoree and senior captain Jide Ogunbiyi. It was his fourth honor from the league. Junior and sophomore captains Stephen McCarthy and Jalil Anibaba earned second team honors, while freshman Brandon Zimmerman received All-Freshman team and honorable mention accolades. McCarthy was a second-team all-conference recipient in 2007 and Co-Freshman of the year in 2006. Anibaba was the 2007 WCC Freshman of the Year. Junior Jeff Cosgriff and sophomore Kellen Wantulok both earned their second accolade from the WCC as they were also named honorable mention. Ogunbiyi was once again a fixture in the Broncos defense and started in 14 of the Broncos 20 contests. He ends his collegiate career with 30 career points on 11 goals and eight assists. This was his first All-WCC first team honor as he has been named honorable mention the last three seasons and to the All-Freshman team in 2005. McCarthy was one of two players to receive second team honors for the second straight season. A preseason M.A.C. Hermann Trophy candidate, he started in 17 of 18 contests in which he appeared. He scored two goals on the season. The first was against San Jose State (Sept. 24) and the second was against Gonzaga (Oct. 31). He will enter his senior season in 2009 with 18 career points on eight career goals and two career assists. Anibaba finished the season in third place on the team with six points on two goals and two assists. He scored both of his goals against Saint Mary's. The first came in Moraga on Oct. 12 and the second came at Buck Shaw Stadium on Nov. 7. Anibaba will enter his junior campaign in 2009 with 10 points on three career goals and four career assists. Zimmerman tied for first on the team in assists and scored his first collegiate goal this season. His goal came against Loyola Marymount on Oct. 17. His three assists were awarded on Brian Martin's goal against then-No. 16 UIC (Sept. 1), Connor Mitchell's goal against Stanford (Sept. 27) and Sean Danzeiser's goal against LMU (Oct. 17). Cosgriff finished the season tied for first on the team in goals (3) and second on the team in points (8). His first goal of the year was against Loyola-Chicago (Aug. 30), his second goal was against then-No. 16 UIC (Sept.1) and his final goal was the game-winner against San Diego (Oct. 19). Cosgriff also dished out two assists this season. He will enter his senior season in 2009 with nine goals, two assists and 20 points. Wantulok started in 11 of 19 contests this season and scored two goals for the Broncos. His first goal was Santa Clara's lone goal against Portland (Oct. 3) and his second goal was against Gonzaga (Oct. 5). He will enter his junior campaign in 2009 with six career goals, three career assists and 12 career points. The Broncos finished the 2008 season with a 4-9-7 overall and 2-5-5 in WCC action.
