SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Underclassmen Erik Hurtado and Eric Masch scored two unanswered goals in the second half but it wasn't enough to beat league-leading San Diego Sunday at Torero Stadium as USD beat Santa Clara 3-2.
San Diego (9-3-0; 5-0-0 WCC) sits atop the West Coast Conference standings and are in position to qualify for the school's 12 NCAA Tournament in the past 14 years. USD came into the week leading the league in points (48) and boasting the WCC's best defense.
Santa Clara (3-7-3; 1-3-1 WCC) was looking for a pivotal conference win after playing LMU to a 1-1 draw Friday in Los Angeles. The Broncos are in the midst of playing six-of-seven conference matches away from home.
Junior keeper Jeremy Del Re, a product of nearby San Jose and Bellarmine College Prep, made his first start in goal for Santa Clara.
San Diego netted two early scores and added another off a ball Del Re had knocked down to take a 3-0 lead at halftime. USD saw Andrew Feld assist in the first goal 12 minutes in and score the second six minutes later.
Santa Clara will try and rebound next weekend against local rival St. Mary's. SCU plays the Gaels back-to-back, Friday night at Buck Shaw Stadium and Sunday in Moraga.
