SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's soccer squad ended its match with Brown University in a 2-2 tie during the first match of the USF/Diadora Classic in San Francisco, Calif., Friday evening.
The Broncos (4-3-1) jumped out to an early lead in the seventh minute when Kirk Fonseca scored his third goal of the season off a penalty re-start from just outside the penalty box arc. Santa Clara led for the next 32 minutes before the Bears (3-2-2) knotted the score at one when Ibrahim Diane notched his third goal of the season off a long cross from the right side by Adom Crew.
After the intermission Brown took its first lead of the game in the 56th minute when Crew posted his ninth goal of the year off a corner kick pass from Matt Goldman. Santa Clara kept the offensive pressure on in an effort to equalize, which it finally did in the 83rd minute when sophomore Will Weatherly took a Matt Upton pass and beat the keeper in an one-on-one situation for his fourth goal of the year.
The Broncos led in the shots category by a 14-5 margin heading into the overtime period but could only manage one shot in the extra frame, but did not allow a shot on its own goalie Steve Cronin, forcing the 2-2 double-overtime final score.
Cronin posted two saves on the evening while his counterpart Christopher Gomez notched five saves in the match. The Broncos took six more corner kicks than the Bears, but could not score on any of them.
Santa Clara will resume play in the USF/Diadora Classic Sunday at Noon when they take on the Crimson from Harvard University. Brown will face USF in the tournament finale at 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
