Men's Soccer Defeats Sacramento State, 1-0
Oct. 30, 2001
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University's men's soccer moved above the .500 mark for the first time since September 20 with a 1-0 victory over Sacramento State on Tuesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The Broncos (8-7-0) and the Hornets (4-7-4) played the first half at a very slow pace, combining for only seven shots between the two teams. The action picked up tremendously in the second half as each team got several good chances on goal.
Senior Keith Burden took advantage of one such chance as he scored his first goal of the season at the 76:44 mark on a soft, chip-like, shot that made it past Sacramento State netminder Leo Marin. Fellow senior Anthony Chimienti made a successful return from knee surgery to pick up his first assist on the year.
Santa Clara ended up out-shooting the Hornets, 10-7 in the second half, requiring Marin to make four saves. Steve Cronin and Rusty Johnson split time between the pipes for the Broncos, each making one save in 45 minutes of action.
The Broncos return to WCC action on Saturday when the University of Portland heads in to Buck Shaw Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
