SANTA CLARA, Calif. - 23rd-ranked Santa Clara University (3-2-0) scored its first goal in regulation time of the 2001 season en route to a 1-0 victory over Long Island University (3-2-1) in the nightcap of the Santa Clara adidas Classic.
The Broncos out-shot the Blackbirds 24-12 in the game but could not break through with a goal until the 79th minute when senior Anthony Chimienti scored his first goal of the season on a pass from Stephen Biondilillo. Chimienti took the long pass from Biondilillo and went to his right while shooting back across to his left, just sliding the ball past the Blackbirds netminder Eric Masters.
The Bronco defense was stellar as usual in front of Rusty Johnson. The senior netminder notched his second shutout of the season, moving his career total to 22.5. Johnson faced only two shots that had chances of going in before the final five minutes of the contest. He then made three stellar saves to preserve the win in the waning moments of the match.
"Rusty was huge again tonight," said head coach Mitch Murray. "He has preserved many games for us in the past and has always shown that he is capable of doing that on a consistent basis, and tonight he showed that again."
The Broncos will face Marquette University in Saturday night's adidas Classic finale. The Golden Eagles came away with a big overtime victory of the Univeristy of San Francisco in game one on Thursday night, 3-2. (Marquette-San Francisco Box Score)
Sean Reti scored twice for Marquette, including the game-winner at the 97:34 mark of the first overtime period. Reti also assisted on the Golden Eagles other goal.
Long Island and San Francisco will face each other in the first match on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff for game one is slated for 5:00 p.m. with the final contest scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
