SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Reigning West Coast Conference Men's Soccer Defender of the Year Jeff Stewart received yet another accolade to go on to his already stellar athletic resume. The Santa Clara University team captain can now add the title of preseason All-America to his name.
CollegeSoccerNews.com tabbed Stewart as a third team All-America performer, while CollegeSoccer.com listed the senior from Bellevue, Wash., on its Honorable Mention squad.
"Jeff is a phenomenal player," said Bronco head coach Mitch Murray. "His strength lies within his incredible desire to win, and his durability. I think he is a player that many professional clubs will be looking at very closely this year."
Last season Stewart started all 17 of Santa Clara's matches and helped lead the defense to 10 shutouts on the year, including three in a row to finish out the season. Stewart has helped guide the Broncos' defense to an amazing 0.79 goal-against average during his three-year career. tewart even helped the Broncos on the offensive end last year scoring his lone goal of the season against Oregon State on September 14th, lifting Santa Clara to a 1-0 victory.
Much will be expected of Stewart this season as Santa Clara looks to return to national prominence. The Broncos enter the season ranked No. 13 in the nation by CollegeSoccer.com. Additionally, SCU was picked to finish second in the 2001 WCC race according a preseason poll of the league's coaches.
Santa Clara will open its 2001 season against San Diego State on August 31st in San Diego, Calif. The Broncos will begin their home schedule on September 4th with a match against Bradley University at Buck Shaw Stadium.
