Two Broncos Travel with U.S. Under-20 Squad to Holland

May 15, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team head coach Thomas Rongen has selected 18 players for the USA's tour to Holland, which will include participation in the Groningen International Tournament, as well as a friendly against rising African power Burkina Faso. The team travels to Europe on May 15, before kicking off the tournament on May 17.

Of the 18 players chosen, two current Santa Clara players are on the roster and expected to have a huge impact for the U.S. Freshman netminder Steve Cronin and fellow freshman defender Ryan Cochrane will both lace up the boots for the matches in Holland.

The U.S. Under-20s have posted a near-perfect 8-0-2 record in 2002, including a 1-0 win against Canada in the USA's only international match of the year. The Under-20s are preparing for World Championship qualifying that will take place later this year.

The U.S. opens the Groningen International Tournament on May 17 against FC Twente. The 20s play twice on May 18, facing Qatar in the morning and hosts FC Groningen that afternoon. On the tournament's third day - May 19 - the U.S. will play Newcastle United and Cruz Azul, before the tournament concludes with classification games on May 20. The U.S. travels to Amsterdam on May 21, and then takes on Burkina Faso on May 22 in Utrecht, before returning to the U.S. on May 23.

Mike Magee has led the U.S. attack this year, scoring seven goals in just seven matches (337 minutes). Magee scored the gamewinner in the USA's win in their only international this year - a 1-0 win against Canada on January 9. Knox Cameron has also added two goals for the Under-20s this year.

The USA's defense has posted six shutouts and allowed only four goals in 10 matches this year. Goalkeeper Steve Cronin has been solid in goal, giving up only two goals in six matches.

Seven of the 18 players named were members of the 2001 Under-17 World Championship team. David Chun, Jordan Harvey, Chad Marshall, Mike Magee, Justin Mapp, Jordan Stone and Ford Williams combined for 115 caps at the Under-17 level.

The U.S. squad will be without three of their top offensive players, as Dallas Burn forward Eddie Johnson is out with an ankle injury, and the D.C. United duo of Santino Quaranta and Bobby Convey will remain in the U.S. on club duty. Four other MLS players will represent America's top domestic league, as Jordan Stone (Dallas Burn), Devin Barclay (San Jose Earthquakes), Miguel Saavedra (Chicago Fire) and Justin Mapp (D.C. United) look to showcase their skills in Europe.

The camp also includes two U.S. players who are playing professionally in Europe. Frank Simek plays for the youth team of English powerhouse Arsenal, and Dimi Colon plays with Vfb Stuttgart in Germany.

Rongen's team is expected to regroup in mid-June for a training camp.
