DALY CITY, Calif. - Scott Travers rallied back Thursday morning to defeat Kevin Fryer 2 and 1 in the Round of 16 at the 98th Annual California State Amateur Championships at Lake Merced GC in Daly City. Travers advances to the Quarterfinal round on Friday, June 26 and will face defending champion and No. 2 seed Nick Delio of Valencia. The duo will tee off at 7:50 a.m.
The pair played through the 17th hole (par 67), with Travers defeating Fryer by two strokes. The Bronco finished one-under par 66, while Fryer was one over 68. True Lake Merced summer weather, featuring swirling winds and fog, returned for the first time all week, making scoring conditions more difficult.
All was squared after the first whole, but a birdie from Fryer gave him the early advantage. The San Ramon native was only able to claim a two-stroke lead over Travers by the sixth hole. Yet, the Trabuco Canyon, Calif. native rallied with an eagle on the eighth and a birdie on the ninth to even the playing field. However, Fryer reclaimed the advantage with par on the next two holes as Travers hit bogie.
Once again the Santa Clara junior's endurance and mental strength helped him to fight back and even the score again. It remained all squared for 13th, 14th and 15 holes until Travers earned his first lead of the day after a birdie of the 16th hole. An even par was all Travers needed on the final hole, as Fryer shot one over.
Travers' quarterfinal opponent Delio defeated Micah Burke of Los Angeles 4 and 3. A sophomore at Cal State Northridge, Delio was the co-medalist after stroke play on Monday and Tuesday. He finished nine-under 135 with rounds of 69 and 66 respectively.
The road to the championship continues with Semifinals immediately following the Quarterfinals on Friday, June 26. The final two amateurs will then fight for the California State Championship on Saturday, June 27.
