LONG BEACH, Calif. - Santa Clara University junior Scott Travers was 9-under par at the 14th Annual Del Walker Intercollegiate at the Virginia Country Club and sophomore Cory Mehl shot a final-round 66. Travers was just two shots off the lead and placed second overall in the 98-player field.

Santa Clara was just six strokes behind No. 19 Oregon, carding the second-lowest team score of Friday's final round. The Broncos are off to an outstanding start to their 2009-10 season, winning the Firestone Grill Invitational in Palm Desert after coming-in sixth at Michigan State's Spartan Classic.

"This being a six-count-five event, it shows we have real team depth," said Santa Clara head coach Rob Miller. "Cory (Mehl) had a fantastic day. He was 7-under at one point, big tournament for him. Rick and Scott Lamb played well, a solid team effort."

Mehl's 66 put him in the top 10 for the first time since placing fourth at last season's West Coast Conference Championships. Travers, No. 70 nationally, should move up in GolfWeek's latest individual rankings.

The Broncos return to tournament action Monday-Tuesday, October 26-27 at the University of New Mexico's Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate. The Las Cruces event will feature more of the countries top programs.

"We will get some practice in after traveling over to New Mexico," added Miller. "It will be a similar field and may be even tougher, but we have a lot of confidence right now."
