PALM DESERT, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team held off Cal State Northridge to capture tournament championship honors at the 16-team Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. Junior Scott Travers fired a 3-under par 69 in Tuesday's final round to finish 5-under for the tournament and place second overall. Travers was one of just seven golfers in the 92-player field to finish the three-round event under par. Travers' 69 and true-freshman Scott Lamb's 2-under par 70 were among the tournament's top final-round performances. Senior Jimmy Cacho shot a team-low 68 in Round Two Monday, allowing SCU enter play Tuesday morning with a slim two-shot advantage over Cal State Northridge. "The scoring was tough today," said Santa Clara Head Coach Robert Miller. "They had the pins tucked away in the Sunday spots, similar to what the PGA pins would be at the Bob Hope Classic here. Scott (Travers) played with Cal State Northridge's number one, Nick Delio, a very good player that Scott has played against before. Scott was able to out-duel him and put us over the top." Ronnald Monaco birdied four of his last seven holes to help SCU secure the win. It was the Broncos' first tournament title since winning the UC Irvine Anteater Classic in February of 2008. "It is really nice to get a victory this early," said Miller. "We have two tough tournaments coming up and this gives us confidence we can compete with anybody and at any event." Santa Clara will next play at the Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic, hosted by Long Beach State, October 22-23. The University of Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate
