PALM DESERT, Calif. - Santa Clara University's men's golf team combined to shoot a blistering 4-under par 572 Monday through two rounds of the University of Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate. The event held at the 7,305-yard par 72 Classic Club in Palm Desert. Calif., features 16 teams, predominately from the West and Midwest regions.

Scott Travers - coming off a 3rd-place finish at the Michigan State Spartan Classic in September - birdied nine holes Monday to stand at sixth on the individual leaderboard at 2-under (71-71, 141). Jimmy Cacho - also a Top 10 finisher at the Spartan Classic - fired a 4-under 68 in the afternoon round to stay in contention. Cacho is also tied for sixth at 2-under (74-68, 142).

Rick Lamb went 4-under on the Classic Club's par fives Monday and is at 1-over and tied for 13th (75-70, 145). Steady play from Ronnald Monaco saw him lead all 92 players with 26 pars in 36 holes. Monaco is at 2-over (71-75, 146).

"This is a huge opportunity for us," said Santa Clara Head Coach Robert Miller. "Our upperclassmen are carrying us, with Jimmy (Cacho) really scoring well around the greens. Scott (Travers) is long off the tee and is a real solid player - he's one of the best in the WCC. Then you add in the boost from our freshmen; the contributions from our young players have been key. Great to have our freshmen get the experience of being in the hunt this early in the season, hopefully something we can learn from."

Santa Clara's last tournament win was at UC Irvine in the spring of 2008.
