Horacek Leads Men's Golf to Fourth Place at WCCs
April 17, 2001
SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Junior Sandy Horacek tied for sixth place individually to lead the Santa Clara's men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the West Coast Conference Championships today in Santa Rosa. The women's team was represented by two golfers.
The event was hosted at the Windsor Golf Club, a par-72 layout measuring 6,650 yards for the men and 5,818 for the women.
Horacek carded rounds of 74, 71 and 77 to finish six strokes over par and tie for sixth place with San Francisco's Chad Thompson at 222. Sophomore Justin Ahasic placed 16th at 229 while seniors Drew Corwin and Joe Wagner also placed in the top 20, tying for 19th place with a 230.
Pepperdine won its third straight title by 26 strokes, finishing with a two-under-par 862. All five Wave golfers placed in the top 10, with Randy Creighton, Michael Beard and Jason Allred sweeping the top three spots. San Francisco placed second, while Portland finished in third, 37 strokes above par. Santa Clara finished with a 910, +46.
The women's team was only able to field three golfers when play began yesterday morning, but went down to two golfers in the afternoon round, who played as individuals. Sophomore Katie Gross led the Broncos with a 283 scorecard, followed closely by freshman Katie Johnson's 305. Junior Sarah Dahm withdrew from competition due to a back injury.
San Francisco upset defending league champion Pepperdine for its second WCC title since the conference added women's golf five years ago. Don Emilie Arnaud earned individual medalist honors with a six-over 222 while teammate Susannah Laing was the tournament runner-up two strokes back. Pepperdine placed second, followed by Portland and Gonzaga. Loyola Marymount, San Diego and Saint Mary's do not sponsor women's golf programs.
The men return to action in four days, when they take part in the U.S. Intercollegiate, hosted at the Stanford Golf Course Saturday and Sunday. Both days will begin competition with 8 a.m. shotgun starts. The women will next compete in San Luis Obispo in a dual meeting with Cal Poly on April 26. Tee times will begin at noon.
