Day One Results

MADERA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team sits alone in second place following day one of the West Coast Conference Championships held at the Riverbend Golf Club in Madera, Calif.

The Broncos led after the first round with their team total of 286 and trail by only three strokes after round two following a second round 289 on Monday. Pepperdine holds the overall lead following rounds of 294 and 278. Their team total of 278 in round two was the best round of the day. San Francisco sits in third place following rounds of 298 and 282.

Santa Clara freshman Michael Nicoletti sits in a tie for second place after day one following consecutive rounds of 2-under par. His two-round total of 140 is just three strokes behind Michael Putnam of Pepperdine.

Sophomore Matt Klenz fired rounds of 70 and 74, good enough to finish day one in a tie for sixth place at even par. Freshman Blake Lugar carded rounds of 73 and 72 to sit in a tie for ninth place with a 36-hole total of 1-over par, 145.

Chris DeMartini posted rounds of 73 and 74 and is tied for 15th place with his two-round total of 3-over par, 147. Justin Ahasic, who entered the tournament with the Broncos' best scoring average on the season, carded rounds of 75 and 73 and is tie for 21st following the first two rounds.

The Broncos will conclude play at the league championships with 18-holes Tuesday morning at the Riverbend Golf Club. The WCC tournament is the team's second to last tournament of the year as the Broncos will wrap up their 2002-2003 season at the U.S. Intercollegiate Tournament at the Stanford Golf Club this Saturday and Sunday.
