April 10, 2001
GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Santa Clara's men's golf team improved two places in the standings after carding a final-round 299 this afternoon despite windy and rainy conditions and tied for seventh place at the Grand Canyon University/Thunderbird Invitational. The event was hosted at the Palm Valley Golf Club, a par-72 layout measuring 7,015 yards. The Broncos opened the tournament yesterday morning with a 302 and improved that mark by 10 strokes during Monday afternoon's second round to sit in ninth place heading into today's competition. The team tied with Cal State Northridge at 893, 29 strokes over par. All five Broncos scored rounds in the 70s, led by senior Drew Corwin's 74. His three-round total 220 placed him in a tie for 11th place. Junior Sandy Horacek also carded a 74 this afternoon and totaled 223 strokes over the two days to tie for 21st place. Mark Lawless of Cal State Stanislaus fired a final-round four-under par 68 to finish at 10 under for the tournament, and took individual medalist honors. His team placed second, seven strokes behind team champion and host Grand Canyon. The Antelopes finished with a four-over 868. The Broncos return to action next week at the West Coast Conference Championships. The event will take place April 16-17 at the Windsor Golf Club in Santa Rosa, Calif.
