Men's Golf Sits in Ninth at Thunderbird Invite

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - After carding a first-round 302 at the Grand Canyon University/Thunderbird Invitational this morning, Santa Clara's men's golf team improved that mark by 10 strokes in the second round and currently sits in ninth place. The event is being hosted at the Palm Valley Golf Club, a par-72 course totaling 7,015 yards. Host Grand Canyon leads all squads with a 13-under-par 563. Central Oklahoma and Weber State were the only other teams to card totals under par, and both sit tied for second place with one-under 575s. Santa Clara is in ninth with a 594, just two strokes behind West Coast Conference rival Loyola Marymount and 11 ahead of its other league competition, Portland. Antelope seniors Jon Davis and Andy Davis (no relation) share the overnight lead with eight-under 136s, two shots better than Mark Lawless of Cal State Stanislaus. Santa Clara is led by senior Drew Corwin, who registered a career-low 69 in the first round and is currently tied for 22nd place at a two-over 146. Sophomore Justin Ahasic is just two strokes behind his Bronco teammate, while junior Sandy Horacek carded rounds of 75 and 74, good for a share of 40th place. The Broncos conclude action at the Grand Canyon Invitational tomorrow morning at Palm Valley. Tee times begin at 7 a.m.
