NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team fired back-to-back rounds of 303 on day one of the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational, and sit in 10th place heading into the final round on Tuesday.

This year's Anteater Invitational is being contested on the 6,876-yard, par-72 Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, Calif., with Santa Clara's Matt Klenz entering as the defending champion.

Monday's first two rounds were rough for the Broncos whose top finisher was Blake Lugar who shot consecutive rounds of 1-over par, 73, to sit in a tie for 11th place at 146. John Colyar was the next highest finisher for the Broncos, carding rounds of 74 and 76, good enough for a tie for 25th place at 6-over par, 150.

Klenz had a rough start to his title defense, posting rounds of 77 and 79 to end the first day in a tie for 43rd at 12-over par, 156. Michael Nicoletti is in a tie for 45th at 157, followed by Justin Ahasic who followed his opening round 94 with a very good 4-over par, 76 in round two.

The Broncos are currently tied with Cal State Northride, just four shots behind Cal Poly and six behind UC Santa Barbara. UC Riverside leads the tournament with their 3-under par team score of 573, 13 strokes ahead of the Arizona JV team.

The third and final round will begin at Big Canyon C.C. at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday morning.
