Broncos +8 After First Round of Hilo Invitational

Feb. 6, 2008

Honolulu, Hawaii -- The Santa Clara men's golf team had a difficult start to the beginning of the spring season at the Hilo Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii, shooting a combined +8 as a team and currently sits tied for 15th place. Arizona State and Texas Tech are tied for first at -9.

The Broncos were led by Scott Travers, who shot an even par 70 in the first round. Normally a very solid round, the scores were low at Waikoloa Village Golf Course and it was only good enough to earn him a tie for 29th place. The leader after the first round is Stephen Gross of Arizona State who shot a six-under 64.

Also scoring for Santa Clara was Jimmy Cacho with a one-over 71 which leaves him tied for 36th. Alex Bon came in behind him, shooting a 73. His +3 is good for a tie for 65th. The last scorer for the Broncos was Kellen Moss who comes right in behind Bon with a four-over 74 and is tied for 76th. Shaun Pienkos had a rough start to his first tournament of the year, shooting an 82.

The team will look to bounce back today with a strong second round and move up in the tournament. With two rounds to go, there is a lot of golf yet to be played.
