IRVINE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team finished in a tie for first at the 30th UC Irvine Anteater Invitational at the Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa. The host Anteaters of UCI made up 14 strokes on the final day to eventually beat the Broncos in a playoff. SCU had jumped out to a big lead after the first 36 holes.

All five players from each team participated in the playoff hole with the top four players scoring as UC Irvine captured the title shooting a 2-over (14) while Santa Clara carded a 5-over (17) after they replayed the 18th hole.

"None of our guys played poorly, they just didn't play well enough to win," said Santa Clara head coach Robert Miller. "Everyone was middle of the pack for us; fortunately we had enough of a cushion to tie for first."

Four Santa Clara players were under par after the first two rounds Monday, led by Scott Travers and Jimmy Cacho who finished fifth and sixth respectively on the final leaderboard. Ronnald Monaco and Scott Lamb also posted top 10 finishes, Lamb going even par for the tournament and Monaco 1-over.

SCU is coming off an outstanding fall season in which the team won the 16-team Desert Intercollegiate and saw Travers rank among the NCAA leaders in scoring average.

The Broncos play at the University of San Diego's event next Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 8-9.
