IRVINE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team is in position to win the 30th UC Irvine Anteater Invitational, at the Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa. The Broncos jumped out to a 13-stroke lead after 36 holes Monday. Four Santa Clara players were under par after the first two rounds, led by Scott Travers and Jimmy Cacho who enter final round play 5-under and tied for third. Rick Lamb and Ronnald Monaco also posted sub-par numbers and are among the field's top 10.
"Certainly the best 36-hole day we've had in a long time," said Santa Clara head coach Robert Miller, who feels his 2009-10 team is the best he's had in his five years on the Mission Campus. "We came in as one of the top teams in this field and winning a tournament like this, and winning by a large margin would definitely help our ranking."
SCU is coming off an outstanding fall season in which the team won the 16-team Desert Intercollegiate and saw Travers rank among the NCAA leaders in scoring average.
"We had a good fall but I don't think Ronnald (Monaco) and Jimmy (Cacho) reached their potential," said Miller. "The way they played yesterday bodes well for us. Jimmy's best performance of the year to date, he was our No. 2 player coming in (last fall) and this is great sign. Rick (Lamb) continues to build on a strong finish this fall. The idea today is keep the petal to the metal."
