TUCSON, Ariz. – Sophomore Matt McCarty carded a team-low score of 1-under 71 in Monday's final round of the Arizona NIT and Santa Clara men's golf scored a 1-over 289 to finish in 12th place with an even-par 864 total.
The Broncos finished well off the pace of UNLV, which won the tournament with an 814 total.
"It was not fun to watch," head coach Rob Miller said of his team's performance. "The same part of the course that got us yesterday did it again today. It's surprising because it really isn't that tough of a course."
Individually the Broncos were led by senior Hayden Shieh, who carded a final-round even-par 72 after manipulating the 7,262-yard, par-72 Omni Tucson National Catalina Course to a pair of 70s in the first two rounds. He finished in a tie for 28th at 4-under 212.
"Boots (DelBiaggio) had a solid tournament for us," Miller said. "He did his job as the No. 5 guy."
Coming off his first career victory, McCarty entered the final round at 5-over but climbed 10 spots on the leaderboard with his 1-under 71 to place in a tie for 61st.
"We're happy to get out of Tucson," Miller said in reference to his team's 10th-place finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate at the end of January and today's result.
"We'll learn from this and move on," Miller added. "We have four events left in the season and we'll bounce back at Bandon Dunes."
The Broncos will head to Bandon, Ore. for the Bandon Dunes Championship in two weeks. The three-day event is scheduled to get underway on Mar. 11 from the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
