SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University men's golf team will be playing at the picturesque Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara Calif. on Monday and Tuesday, April 2-3. The Broncos are among a 13-team field at the 2012 OGIO‐UCSB Invitational.
Seventh-year Santa Clara men's golf head coach Rob Miller has consistently had the Broncos ranked among the nation's top 80 programs. However, this season, the Broncos are going with a young lineup that has four underclassmen playing in each tournament and the team's best finish this spring was 9th at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson.
The team's lone senior, Ronnald Monaco, is leading SCU in scoring average and is coming off a final-round 73 at the Oregon Duck Invitational last week to place 35th individually among a tough field in Eugene.
Also encouraging, was the final-round play of true freshmen Brett Komoto and Colin Gunstream, who shot 75 and 76 respectively last Tuesday. It would not be surprising to see Bronco sophomores Bobby Monaco and Scott Lowe challenge for a top 10 finish this week. Monaco is the team-leader in birdies and Lowe is one of the top young players coming out of Canada – playing in the Canadian Tour's 2011 ATB Financial Classic in his hometown of Calgary this past July.
This is a crunch time for college golfers, as all teams prep for their respective conference championships at the end of April. SCU will play in Scottsdale, Ariz. at the Cowboy Classic April 9-10, prior to the WCC Championships at San Juan Oaks April 16-17 in nearby Hollister, Calif.
