Slow Start Stalls SCU Men’s Golf in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. – The top men's golf team in the nation, Oklahoma State University, rallied to win the Oregon Duck Invitational in Eugene on Tuesday. Santa Clara University struggled during opening-round play Monday and settled for 12th in the 15-team field.

The opening-round woes for Santa Clara were surprizing, considering the team was coming off a tournament victory in Long Beach two weeks ago. Bronco freshman Bobby Monaco, who starred at South Eugene High School, shot final rounds of 72 and 73 to recover from an opening round 77 to finish tied for 37th overall. SCU sophomore Rick Lamb also finished 6-over for the tournament and tied for 37th.

Like Monaco, Lamb shot a 77 Monday. Four of the five Santa Clara golfers posted rounds of 5-over or 4-over on Monday.

"We could have played better in that opening round, and throughout the tournament quite honestly," said Santa Clara head coach Rob Miller, who is taking the team directly from Oregon, down to San Diego to play in the Barona Collegiate Cup Thursday and Friday.
