SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University men's golf program begins its 2011 spring season Monday, February 7 at the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational. The 54-hole event, played Monday and Tuesday, will be held at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach.
The Broncos finished in a first-place tie at the UCI event a year ago. With just 10 teams participating in 2011, it will be one of the smaller tournaments SCU will play this spring. The field includes four of GolfStat's top 100 programs: No. 88 UC Irvine, No. 89 Santa Clara, No. 93 Arizona and No. 98 St. Mary's.
Exempt from the season's first qualifier is the reigning 'WCC Golfer of the Year' Scott Travers and All-WCC honorees Cory Mehl and Rick Lamb. SCU's complete five-man lineup (plus one individual) for the UC Irvine event will be set by the end of the week.
"We are all optimistic of our chances of moving up (in the rankings) since we all feel that the team really did not show its true talent in the fall," said SCU head coach Rob Miller. "We have seven events to show what we can do before the post season starts."
