SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team fired a final round 300 to finish 10th at the Countrywide Home Loan Intercollegiate hosted by Cal State Northridge Tuesday at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif.
The Broncos improved their team score for the third straight round and finished with a two day total of 911, just one stroke behind Saint Mary's but 10 shots ahead of Portland. Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount were the two other West Coast Conference schools in the tournament, with the Bulldgos finishing 17th with a 933 total and the Lions finishing 18th with a 946 total.
Justin Ahasic was the top finisher for Santa Clara, firing a final round 71 to finish in a tie for fourth place with a 1-under par score of 215. Michael Nicoletti finished tied for 28th after a final round 73 which pushed his two day total to 228.
Vincent Aicale and Jonathan Edwards each shot a 6-over par, 78 on Tuesday, moving Aicale into a tie for 41st and Edwards into a tie for 63rd. Aicale's two day total was 231 while Edwards posted a 237. Blake Lugar rounded out the scoring for the Broncos with his final round 80, which gave him a total of 241, tying him for 84th.
"Justin played the finest tournament of his collegiate career," said head coach John Kennaday. "From start to finish he played extremely well.
"This tournament was a good test for us," Kennaday continued. "We were able to start four guys who didn't play in the last tournament which shows some depth that we have been lacking in the past. The competition to get into the starting lineup is pretty fierce right now which will only help the scores come tournament time."
The Broncos will return home to host the SCU Bronco Invitational next week. The three round, two day tournament will be held at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose on October 28-29.
