Men's Rowing Has Good Showing at Stanford Invitational, Travels to WIRA Championships
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After a good showing last week at the Stanford Invitational, the Santa Clara men's rowing squad is prepping for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association's (WIRA) Championships this coming weekend, April Apr. 27 and 28.
Competing at the Stanford Invitational was a solid test for the Broncos due to the high-level talent.
"We welcomed the opportunity to participate at the event this year and had an opportunity to test some new lineups for the Varsity 8 and 2nd Varsity 8," said Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell.
Farwell thought his crew performed well against the tough competition and was most pleased with his 2nd Varsity boat, which raced against Oregon State's 2nd Varsity Eight and Orange Coast's 2nd Varsity Eight and got some familiarity with crews they will see again this weekend.
"The boat performed well and really made some progress over the weekend," said Farwell. "We will see Orange Coast again this weekend at the WIRA Championships."
As for the First Eight, Farwell though they had some trouble shooting to sure up before this week's event.
"The Varsity Eight struggled a bit this weekend and we are currently trouble shooting some issues with the line-up," said Farwell. "We know we have a fast boat but we are running out of time. We will be working hard this week to establish more boat speed in preparation for WIRAs."
This weekend the Broncos travel to the WIRA Championships in Sacramento, Calif. Farwell is looking forward to the challenge of competing against more high-level crews.
