WCC Championships Friday for Women's Crew

April 28, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's crew team will compete in the 2008 WCC Crew Championships this coming Friday, May 2. Last year the Broncos were part of a three-way tie for second place in the conference. This year looks to be even more competitive as Gonzaga is the favorite to win.

Santa Clara is seeded fifth out of the five teams competing, but has gotten valuable experience against conference opponents. At the San Diego Crew Classic the Bronco Varsity 8 was in the Petite Final with both St. Mary's and LMU. The Broncos finished two seconds back of St. Mary's and just under one second from LMU.

In the Women's 2V8, Santa Clara has only raced against Saint Mary's. The Gaels prevailed by ten seconds the last time the two teams met.

Following the WCC Champs on Friday the team will race in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4. The WIRA encompasses all the WCC schools as well as all the non-Pac10 schools on the west coast. During the last WIRA coaches poll the Bronco Varsity 8 was ranked 9th.
