Women's Crew Finishes Season With Strong Showing At Dad Vail

May 17, 2006

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Santa Clara women's crew concluded its 2005-06 season this past weekend by competing in the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on the waters of the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Coming off of a solid performance at the WCC Championships two weeks ago, the SCU Varsity Eight reached an important milestone on its way to a fourth-place finish in the petite final.

In the preliminary heats, where the top two finishers of each race automatically advance past the repecharges into Saturday's semifinal, Santa Clara made school history as they captured their heat and became the first SCU crew to ever earn the automatic semifinal berth.

The Broncos pulled out to an early lead, which they held heading into the final 500 meters. Eastern Michigan began charging but SCU held off the challenge and took the heat by one second with a time of 7:06.52. The victory allowed the women to rest up for the remainder of the day and prepare for Saturday's semifinal.

In the semis, the top two finishers of each race advance to the Grand Final, while the third- and fourth-place crews head to the petite final, with the final two boats being eliminated. Santa Clara held the second spot through the first 1,000 meters but a late charge by the crew from St. Joseph's enabled them to overtake both SCU and leader Buffalo. St. Joseph's took the semifinal, while Buffalo held on to take second by four seconds over the Broncos, who in turn held off UC Santa Barbara by half a second for third and a spot in the petite final.

Facing off against five more schools in the petite final, the Broncos battled their way to a fourth-place finish in a time of 6:53.19, only two seconds off the pace of second-place UC Santa Barbara and third-place Connecticut. Bucknell shot out to a quick lead and made it stick, capturing the final with a time of 6:46.2. The Broncos held off Colgate and Fordham.
