2004 Cable Car Classic Postgame Quotes

Dec. 29, 2004

Santa Clara Head Coach Dick Davey
...On the performance.
"As many negatives as there are, we like to look for some positives. We battled a little bit better. If we could clean up some stuff, like make a few free throws when we need to and hold onto the ball when it's thrown to us. We need to do some little things that give us a little better chance to be successful. All of the guys thought if he could have done one or two things better, we would have had a better chance to be successful. We are trying to put the pieces back together. I think these guys have enough character that they can do that. The sooner the better, but you have to be able to win it at the end of the year too."

...on team's energy level
"I thought it was better than it was last night. Their people are making more shots whether that has to do with their offense or our defense, I can't tell you. It just seems when you are in a rut, the rut can continue to rut right on out. Right now, that's where we are."

Freshman Guard Brody Angley
...on hitting the three-pointer to send the game into overtime.
"Coachvdrew up a play where Ethan went up and Travis would try to pop into him. Then he would try to hit me, Ethan or Kyle up top. I was hoping it was going in. It may have been a double clutch, but it doesn't mean much if you don't get the 'w'."

...on the positives of the night.
"We are taking the first step, just in coming back. I thought tonight was a better effort from everyone, compared to last night. If you look at it in a positive way, we did make some strides. We have a great group of guys. We have some great players in Doron and Travis and they are our leaders. Once we start clicking, good things will start happening."

Junior Forward Travis Niesen
...on Brody Angley's last-second shot.
"Coach drew up the play and we executed it pretty well. I think the hardest part is getting the shot off. It's like a prayer, but it was a good shot. He is a tough kid and it went in. We have to hand it to Coach Davey. He gives us stuff to execute and it all comes down to if we execute it or not. When we do, that happens. When we don't, we lose. I think he just came up with it. We have never practiced that. We do practice last minute scenarios. However, we have never done that play."

Yale Head Coach James Jones
...on Santa Clara's last-second shot in regulation.
"We had the big three to get the lead and put us in that situation. Our guys bit on a play, we tried to go for the steal. We should have played behind, we did a bad job on that. The kid made a double pump three point shot, but you have to give him credit for that. Not all kids can make shots like that."

...on what he told his team heading into overtime
"I tried to be as upbeat with my guys as possible. We hit a big shot, but they hit a big shot too. I tried to explain that to them. I tried to let them know we still had an opportunity to win the game and we did."

...on the play of Eric Flato
"He played unbelievable. I have been looking for someone to come off the bench and contribute like that. He did an unbelievable job for us tonight and that's just what the doctor ordered."
