Broncos Blow Past UC Santa Cruz 93-70

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Six Broncos scored in double figures as the Santa Clara University men's basketball team rolled to a 93-70 win over UC Santa Cruz Monday night at the Leavey Center.

Santa Clara freshman Brandon Rohe led all scorers with 22 points and shot 5-of-10 from beyond the three-point arc to lead the Broncos to a 2-0 mark for the first time in three seasons. Cord Anderson and Jim Howell both recorded double-doubles for the first time in their careers at SCU. Anderson posted 14 points and 10 boards, while Howell chipped in 12 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Travis Niesen scored 13 points and Ethan Rohde and Alex Kargbo added 11 in the game.

UC Santa Cruz fell to 0-3 on the year. The Banana Slugs were led by Chris Bazelton's 14 points.

The Broncos, playing without the services of five players, including junior guard Kyle Bailey, due to injury, jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead in the game keyed by consecutive three-point field goals by Rohde. The Banana Slugs then outscored SCU by a 10-2 margin over the next 4:00 to tie the game at 10-apiece.

The remainder of the first half saw the two teams trading the lead four times with the Broncos never leading more than four points. UCSC's Alex Al-Sabah connected on a three-point field goals with just :24 left on the clock to bring the Slugs to within one point before Bronco junior Alex Kargbo connected on an acrobatic tip-in to give SCU a 40-37 lead going into the locker room.

The story of the second half was much different as the Broncos held UCSC without a field goal for the first 4:09 and outscored the Slugs by a 26-7 margin to grab a 22-point lead with 13:40 remaining. SCU stretched the lead to a game-high 29 points on a jumper by Brad Anderson with 7:12 left on the clock.

Santa Clara returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Montana State. The Bobcats are 1-0 on the season following a 56-53 win over Washington on Sunday. Tickets are available by calling the athletic ticket office at 408/554-4660.
