SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Casey Calvary tied a career-high with 29 points and the Zags made 51 trips to the free throw line as Gonzaga downed Santa Clara 70-64 Thursday night.
Calvary scored 19 in the second half and hit 12 free throws for the Bulldogs (13-5, 5-0 West Coast Conference). Zach Gourde scored 20 and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
There were seven lead changes in the first half. Gonzaga took the lead with four minutes remaining in the first half and never trailed again.
Down by five with 2:24 remaining in the game, Santa Clara was forced to foul to gain possession. But the Bulldogs shot well from the line, hitting 4 of 6 free throws during that period. Gonzaga finished 31 of 51. The Broncos hit 15 of 21 free throw attempts.
With his start, Bronco senior Brian Jones moved into sole possession of second-place on the Santa Clara list for career starts with 104. He is three shy of Kurt Rambis' school record. He is also on pace to become the first player in WCC history to record 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists in a career.
