Santa Clara Announces 2011 Men’s Basketball Signees

Santa Clara Head Basketball Coach Kerry Keating announced the 2011 Bronco signing class on Wed., Nov. 10. The 2011 Santa Clara class includes forward/center Robert Garrett (Sacramento HS, Sacramento, Calif.); wing Denzel Johnson (Clovis West HS, Fresno, Calif.); and forward Karim York (Del Valle HS, Del Valle, Texas).

"Once again, our staff has addressed what we feel are needs for our team. On top of the fact that all three of these student athletes are good students and come from great families, they all possess the talent needed to help us continue to build a successful program here at Santa Clara. We are excited about signing them today, both as players and people!," said Bronco head coach Kerry Keating.

6'11 235 lbs. Center Sacramento, Calif. (Sacramento High School)

High School Experience: Will be a 2011 graduate from Sacramento High School … named to the Long Beach Press-Telegram's 32nd Best in the West basketball third team … his junior year he averaged 7 points, 2.4 blocks and 8 rebounds per game … during his junior year, he lead his team to a 26-8 record getting them to the NorCal Divison III regional final.

Personal: From Sacramento, Calif. … teammates call him "Big Rob"… Hopes to take his skills acquired from Santa Clara and play professionally in the NBA.

Coach Keating on Robert: "We've recruited Robert for a long time and it has been great to see his improvement over that time. He is a willing defender and rebounder already, and a great teammate to boot. He comes from a great program and his coaches have done a tremendous job bringing Robert to this point. Our team is excited to have Robert in the family and anytime we can add 6-11 and 240 to the mix, good things abound."

Why Robert Chose Santa Clara: "Honestly from the minute I stepped on campus on my visit the coaches and players made me feel like family.  I loved that feeling when I came on campus.  As a player, I feel like it's a perfect fit for me.  I have seen the work Santa Clara has done with big men, like John Bryant, and I'm excited to be a Bronco."


6'3 185 lbs. Guard Fresno, California (Clovis West High School)

High School Experience: Will be a 2011 graduate of Clovis West High School … named to the Long Beach Press-Telegram's 32nd Best in the West basketball honorable mention team … was honored at the West Coast All Stars Camp as Best of the Best Team in 2010 … named Best of the West in 2010 … in 2009 he was All-Tourney in the St. Hope Basketball Classic, the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic and in the 2008 CW Nike Classic… scored 41 points in a game at the West Coast All Stars Camp … In his junior year, he averaged 14 ppg, seven rebounds and three assists.

Personal: From Fresno, Calif. … was named after his doctor and his father met Denzel Washington later and he said he was also named after his doctor when his parents couldn't decide on a name … parents are C.J. and Denise Johnson… has two older brothers: Johnathan and Brandon … father played football at San Jose State University… his brother Brandon plays basketball at Kentucky Wesleyan … his god-brother DeJon Jackson played basketball at University of San Diego and graduated in 2010 … his uncle, Gary Payton, played basketball at Oregon State University and professionally with Seattle, the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami … cousin Travis Davis played football at Notre Dame and professionally in the NFL for Jacksonville and Pittsburgh … His hobbies include working out, playing video games and being with family.

Coach Keating on Denzel: "Denzel brings even more versatility to our backcourt and possesses a great feel for the game at either guard spot. He is a good scorer, and his understanding of the game makes him a threat with the ball in his hands. He has been coached, and it shows, and we are excited to add a player of his caliber to the mix."

Why Denzel Chose Santa Clara: "I felt comfortable with the coaching staff and I really like Coach Keating. There are a great group of guys currently at the university, and they also helped to make me feel at home during my visit. The campus is very nice and the degree that I will obtain from this school is one of the best in the country."


6'8 180 lbs. Forward Del Valle, Texas (Del Valle High School)

High School Experience: Will be a 2011 graduate from Del Valle High School… averaged 12 ppg and 8 rpg his junior year … during his junior season, he helped lead his team to a 28-8 record going to the third round of the Texas 4A playoffs … his AAU team made it to the NBA Red Division finals of the Duncanville Great American Shootout.

Personal: From Del Valle, Texas… Parents are Karim and Jedideh York … has a younger brother Mekhi … related to Torri Williams of Houston Texans and Jeremy Green on the Stanford basketball team … enjoys hanging out with friends, comedy and playing video games.

Coach Keating on  Karim: "Karim gives us size and length on the perimeter and provides us with versatility as well. He can shoot with range and knows how to score and at 6-8 will be able to play multiple spots. He also brings us our first lefty to the family. He, like his classmates, comes in with an understanding that they will be counted on to help raise the level of our play while performing at the best level possible off the floor."

Why Karim Chose Santa Clara: "I chose Santa Clara because of the opportunities available here. I was impressed by everything.  I want to have the opportunity to become a great basketball player, student and person."
