Dec. 3, 2003
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Junior transfer Doron Perkins scored 17 points, including a pair of clinching free throws in the final seconds, and Santa Clara defeated San Jose State 66-64 on Wednesday night.
Eric Walton scored a career-high 21 points and Brett Lilly added a career-high 17 for San Jose State (1-3), which lost its second straight game.
The two schools are within eight miles of each other and participate in a Rivalry Series, in which points are earned for head-to-head competition in each of 13 intercollegiate sports. Santa Clara won last year's competition by a 20-10 margin and leads the current standings 13-5.
Until last year, the winner of the basketball game received a Mayor's Cup. Santa Clara leads the all-time series 66-27 and has won the last four played in San Jose. Each of the past three games has been decided by two points.
Michael McFadden hit a 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining to bring San Jose State within 62-61 but Bailey responded with two free throws five seconds later and the Broncos were able to hold the late San Jose State surge.
Perkins made two free throws with eight seconds remaining to secure the win.
After Santa Clara opened a 21-12 lead midway through the first half, the Spartans outscored the Broncos 22-8 the rest of the way to take a 34-29 halftime lead. There were 12 lead changes in the first half.
