Gomes Named to ABCA All-West Region First Team
June 18, 2002 SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University rightfielder Joey Gomes added yet another accolade to his already impressive resume on Tuesday when he was named First Team All-West Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association. The senior from Petaluma, Calif., had one of the best offensive years in schools history in 2002 and here's why. The .408 batting average ranked him No. 36 in the nation in 2002 and No. 3 in the Santa Clara record books for all-time single season batting average. Following his impressive final year on the Mission Campus, Gomes was named a First Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and was drafted just a few days later in the eighth round by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He joins his brother, Jonny Gomes, and former Bronco standout Randy Winn in the Devil Rays system.
